Dr. Varma is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. Her areas of research include the processing of young offenders in Canada, particularly at the pretrial detention and sentencing stages, parental involvement in youth court, public perceptions of adult and youth crime and justice, deterrence penalties and tax evasion, and the punishment of social assistance fraud. She has taught courses in the areas of punishment and corrections, introduction to Canadian criminal justice, introduction to theories of crime, youth justice and young offenders, and alternatives to formal justice processing (restorative justice).
