Bio/Research

Dr. Hart received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Temple University. After graduate school, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine, through which he received training at the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Hart then worked for four years as an Assistant Professor at York University before joining the Department of Psychology at Ryerson in 2007.

Dr. Hart is committed to community-engaged research to promote sexual health among populations at higher risk for HIV and people living with HIV. Dr. Hart is currently working on a randomized controlled trial of the Gay Poz Sex (GPS) program, with Dr. Barry Adam and the Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance’s Poz Prevention Working Group. GPS is an HIV prevention and sexual health promotion intervention for HIV-positive gay and bisexual men. Dr. Hart is also conducting a pilot study of a cognitive behavioural therapy treatment protocol for social anxiety, substance use, and HIV risk behaviour among gay and bisexual men. Funded by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Boys’ and Men’s Health Team Grant, Dr. Hart is currently designing a large (N=2100) multisite cross-sectional study on combination HIV prevention and recent HIV incidence among gay and bisexual men in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal with researchers across Canada from multiple disciplines. This study will also have a significant research capacity-building component and will develop HIV prevention interventions based on the cross-sectional study data.
