Bio/Research

Tariq Amin-Khan is Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration, and a member of the Yeates School of Graduate Studies, at Ryerson University. In addition to a PhD in Social and Political Thought from York University in Toronto, he holds a Master’s degree in South Asian Studies from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Law from the University of Karachi in Pakistan. His research interests include the security state and securitization, the post-colonial state, capitalist globalism and international development, political and militant Islam, comparative study of multiculturalism, nationalism, and issues of South Asian state and society. He examines many of his research questions from the perspective of political economy and social history, and has also relied on the framework of historical materialist analysis. Tariq currently teaches the following courses at Ryerson: Issues in Third World Politics, Nationalism and Identity, Theories of the State, and the graduate course, The State and the Economy. Tariq has supervised graduate students’ thesis and MRPs in the MPPA program as well as in the program of Immigration and Settlement Studies.

He has published peer-reviewed articles in scholarly journals, such as Contemporary South Asia and Canadian Review for Studies in Nationalism. His more recent piece, “The Rise of Militant Islam and the Security State in the Era of the ‘Long War’” will be published in the June 2009 issue of Third World Quarterly. Two other forthcoming pieces are titled: “Analyzing Political Islam: A Critique of Traditional Historical Materialist Analytic”, and “Issues of Power and Modernity in Understanding Political and Militant Islam”. He is currently completing revisions to his book manuscript: Theorizing the Post-Colonial State in the Era of Capitalist Globalism. He has also written for the Toronto Star, while his newspaper articles appear frequently in the Dawn newspaper.

Tariq is also regularly interviewed on major Canadian national news networks (CBC, CTV, Radio Canada, and OMNI) and on Internet television news, the Real News Network, as an analyst on a range of international and South Asian issues. He is also actively involved in anti-racist work in Toronto and is a founding member of the Anti-Racism Coalition at Ryerson. Tariq is currently Chair of the Equity IssuesCommittee of the Ryerson Faculty Association (RFA), and also a member of the RFA Executive.
