Bio/Research

Dr. Ronald Pushchak is a professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning with a joint appointment in the School of Occupational and Public Health at Ryerson University. From 1999 to 2007, Dr. Pushchak served as Director of the Masters program in the Environmental Applied Science and Management in the School of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Pushchak graduated with a BA in Geography from the University of Toronto. He completed his Masters in Environmental Studies (MES), at York University and holds a PhD in Environmental Planning from Princeton University. In addition to his academic and research activities, he has been involved in a number of professional environmental planning cases including the Ontario efforts to develop legislation to protect municipal drinking water sources, the Canadian concept for disposal of nuclear fuel waste, The Ontario government's efforts to locate municipal waste landfills in the Greater Toronto Area, and the Department of National Defence proposal for low-level military flight training in Labrador.

Dr. Pushchak has also been a consultant in a number of environmental facility siting cases including the Environmental Advisory Team for Environment Canada on the Canadian concept for disposal of high-level radioactive waste and the Technical Experts Committee for source water protection for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. He has published in the fields of environmental assessment, hazardous waste management, high-level radioactive waste disposal, and on the participation of First Nation's people in Canadian plans to dispose of adioactive wastes.

Dr. Pushchak is a member of the Board of Directors of Environmental Defence Canada, a national organization that supports Canadians in legal cases where national or provincial environmental resources are threatened such as the Oak Ridges Moraine and Ontario Greenbelt.

In the Urban and Regional Planning program, he teaches courses in planning theory, environmental planning and environmental assessment and specializes in the following areas of research: environmental impact assessment, risk assessment and hazardous facility siting. He also teaches graduate courses in environmental assessment and facility siting in the Environmental Applied Science and Management program.

In the School of Occupational and Public Health, Dr. Pushchak teaches courses in public health including the public health research course and the seminar in public health. His research interests are in source water protection, environmental impact assessment, risk assessment and hazardous facility location.
