Bio/Research

Paul arrived at the Ryerson School of Journalism in 2005 after more than 30 years as a reporter, editor and broadcaster. He served as Chair of the School until 2010, retired at the end of 2015 and remains active as a researcher, writer, commentator and mentor to young journalists.

He joined The Globe and Mail in 1978 and held several writing and editing positions in national and international news. He was a staff correspondent based in Mexico City (1985-88) and Rio de Janeiro (1988-91), wrote the Worldbeat column on global issues (2001-2004) and served as foreign editor (2004-2005). Earlier he worked at the Vancouver Sun and the News Letter (Belfast, Northern Ireland).

At Ryerson Paul taught courses in international journalism, reporting, feature writing, copy editing, media ethics, the history of news and critical issues in journalism. His current research interests include Canadian journalism education, the history of international news coverage in Canada and challenges to freedom of expression.

He maintains a keen interest in Latin America and has contributed commentary in English and Spanish to Radio Canada International. He is active in Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, an organization dedicated to protecting journalists and promoting freedom of expression in Canada and around the world.

Paul holds a BA and MA in political science from the University of British Columbia. He was selected as the first Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellow for studies at Harvard University in 1983-84. In 2000 Columbia University awarded him the Maria Moors Cabot prize for his reporting on the Americas.

Besides his news work, he has published in the annual Canada Among Nations series, Canadian Foreign Policy, the Mexican Review of Canadian Studies, International Journal, the Literary Review of Canada and the Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Book of the Year.
